The Metro Gold Line was the belle of the ball on Saturday with the opening of the Foothill Extension. But just hours later on Sunday morning, a big rig driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the center divider. The big rig landed on the tracks of the gold line and burst into flames.
The wreckage was removed from the tracks, but caused serious damage. The tracks were melted beneath the overturned trailer, and Metro had to cut electrical service to make repairs. Shuttle service was provided between Allen and Arcadia stations, which were closed due to the accident.
Silver lining: Metro crews worked tirelessly to restore service in time for Monday’s rush hour commute. The driver of the big rig experienced only minor injuries and is expected to recover.
